It was a big week in the transfer portal, and one that should impact college basketball’s rankings for the upcoming season. Two Big Ten players with All-America ability — Kofi Cockburn and Marcus Carr — made their decisions, with Cockburn returning to Illinois for his junior season and Carr electing to spend what will likely be his final college season in Austin, transferring to Texas.
Those helped throw the rankings into a bit of upheaval. Illinois without Cockburn might not have been a top 25 team; even those high on the Fighting Illini had Illinois on the fringes. Then there’s Texas. The Longhorns bring back two starters from a year ago, but have come out better through the portal, landing any number of potential starters for Chris Beard’s first season as head coach. That includes Carr, who appears to fill Texas’ final need as an experienced, high-level point guard who could help take advantage of a talented roster.
With that movement — and more — CBS Sports writer Gary Parrish released his updated Top 25 and 1 rankings, picking the best teams in college basketball for the 2021-22 season.
